Eisenhower, Eisenhower won the nomination and the presidency. Eisenhower offered Warren the position of solicitor general with the promise of a seat on the Supreme Court. Earl Warren accepted but, before the announcement could be made that Warren was to be solicitor general, Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson died suddenly. Keeping his promise, Eisenhower appointed Earl Warren as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.
